The Dream of Internet Marketing from home sounds great but there are three things working against you and you have to guard against them. The first thing is working on your own, the second is the temptation to jump from one program to the next and the third the constant bombardment of new products and the temptations they provide. How are you to overcome these distractions?

Self-Discipline

If you are to work from home it is going to take some serious discipline if you are to make your business a success. You have to decide when to work. You have to make sure you don’t get lazy and waste a morning or an afternoon here and there. Always be determined to get up away from the TV and do something constructive for your business.

You are totally on your own. Keep the discipline up and make sure you schedule your time effectively. This is going to be vital to your business.

Internet Marketers sign up on people’s list. It’s what we do. We want to know if anybody out there has discovered something that can help us. Make a list of only the vital lists you want to be on. Periodically change your email address and only update those vital lists and your contact list. Why spend two hours a day wading through all those emails and deleting them when you can be much more productive?

Signing up for two or three e-mail lists should be enough. Limit it to the experts you really want to hear from. Or better yet, subscribe to their RSS feeds.

It also takes self-discipline to not purchase every new product that comes out with big promises of making you big money or simplifying your life. The basic rule to follow is if it doesn’t help you in the area you have chosen to focus in, or if you already have more than enough, then pass it by.

Products that do deserve some consideration and those that may cut your workload down by automating some part of it. Do consider these as your time is one of your most precious commodities. This could possibly include using a service that will take care of some of your jobs more efficiently. These could be wise investments.

But if it is a product that teaches something that you really don’t need at this point, then don’t fall for it. A new drill could be tempting but if you already had one that did the job your money would stay in your pocket. Be prepared to let it pass.

Stay on Focus

Which leads to the next point, stay on focus. It is so incredibly easy to jump from one thing to another. First, you need to have a business plan. Second, you need to stick with that plan.

If, after a reasonable amount of effort and time you find that your program or project is not working out for you the it may be time to consign it to the failed enterprises folder. Not everything works and there will be some casualties along the way. Make sure you’re not giving up on something just because something else looks new and exciting though. Do this once and you could be business hopping forever.

Working from home is very exciting at first but like most things it can become routine and certain tasks become humdrum. It’s a good idea to network with other home business owners from time to time and maybe change the routine around some after a period. Don’t become bored with your business.

Be aware that it may take a while before you have your business plan sufficiently fluid that you can maintain your business tasks without it becoming tedious. Constantly monitor your plan and tweak it rather than abandon it at the first sign of boredom. Don’t dump a perfectly good plan for the sake of a couple of tweaks.

Hi Scott,
If you are having trouble getting started, I can highly recommend Dennis Becker’s book 5 Bucks A Day. It has helped a lot of people get started.

Cheers
